The Youth Council plan and run one or two diocesan youth events each year. Below are some brief details of events that we have run in the past. If you have been to any of these events it would be great to hear your feedback, please email us on ddyc@hotmail.co.uk
24hour PrayerFast
In May this year (2009) we held a 24hours event in Wingerworth near Chesterfield. Each person taking part in the event fasted for the 24hours whilst they were there. We all got sponsored for giving up food and raised over £1000 for the council’s 2009 charity – Tearfund. During the event we also had someone praying at all times by having a prayer room that people signed up to go and pray in for 30mins at a time.
Over the 24hours we took part in activities to help us to understand better the issues faced by those in poverty and tried out different styles of worship and prayer. We also of course played quite a few silly games, took part in a camera can-doo challenge and (some of us) slept. We drew the 24hours to a close with a communion service (bread and wine never tasted so good!) and then had the world’s fastest ever feast because we were all so hungry!
Release
In October 2008 we held an event called ‘Release’ at St. Alkmund’s church in Derby. This event focussed on the release of people from injustice and poverty so we had stands at the event from different charities
including Christian Aid and Samaritan’s Purse. The event also considered the release of people from sin into the freedom given by Christ’s love and grace so we ended the event with a time of worship including songs from the Band ‘Firefly’ and moving testimonies from two young people.
In the earlier part of the event we had a variety of activities for people to choose from, including sports, drama, dance, face painting, circus skills and craft activities. In between the activities and worshop we paused for a much needed burger and hot dog!
GraceFull
GraceFull was the Youth Council’s first ever event held in July 2007. It took place at St. Gile’s Primary School in Matlock. It was a glorious sunny day and so we held the entire event outside. The event began with games including a bouncy castle, some dressing up and some water pistols! This was followed by a yummy BBQ and ice creams. We ended the day with sung worship led by a band from St. Thomas’ Church Brampton, a short talk and some prayer stations.
