The Youth Council is a group of about 20 young people aged between 13-25years who are involved in church of England churches around Derbyshire. This group of people meet about 6 times a year with the following three aims:
Below is a bit more information about the young people currently on the council.
Tom is the council’s chairman. He leads the council, by arranging meetings, planning agendas and overseeing all the council activities. Tom also represents the Youth Council on Bishop’s Council and at Diocesan Synod. Tom has feet that are sometimes a size eleven but occasionally a size 12. Tom has done military training in the same area as the SAS, RAF Regiment and US Special Forces!
Lauren is the first of the council’s two vice chairs. She steps in to lead meetings when Tom is not around and supports Tom in his responsibilities. Lauren is from the south of the Diocese and is very creative and artistic. Lauren has size 8 shoes and claims to only be visiting planet earth.
Andrew is the second vice chair. Along with Tom and Lauren Andrew helps to run the council. Andrew is probably the member of the council best with computers and produced the promotional presentation for Release. Andrew has size 10 feet and plays too far much cricket. He is also the website co-ordinator for the council.
Becky is the council’s secretary, she keeps notes on all that we talk about in meetings and keeps us organised by reminding us about what we have decided and agreed. Becky has size 6 feet and in the past had a roll of sellotape as a pet which she named Skittles!
Heather
Heather is the council’s assistant secretary. this means that when Beck is unable to get to meetings, shw is able to take over and write the minutes so we can remember what we have talked about!
Jacob (also known as Jolly) has size 8.5 feet. he used to be called Phoebe when he was in the scouts because of his awful singing skills and his redition of ‘Smelly Cat’.
Sophie has recently represented the council at The Lambeth Talk in Leicester and also gave her testimony at ‘Release’. She has size 6 feet and owns a giant Indian Snail.
Laura also represented the council at The Lambeth Talk and with Sophie created some of the prayer stations for Release. Laura has size 4 feet and is addicted to coffee.
Alex joined the youth council in February 2008 and since then has helped out with many different projects. He has size 8 feet and once tried to enter a robot that didn’t work into a school competition.
Emma also joined the council in February 2008. She has size 6 feet and in the summer of 2008 went to Canada to help in some church projects over there on a trip arranged by the diocese.
Izzie is currently representing the council on the planning commitee for the next Diocesan Cathedral Youth Event and is also one the council representatives at The Peak Centre, our diocesan residential and activities centre. She has size 6 feet and absolutely loves tea.
Beth joined the council after seriously impressing Alistair Langton (Diocesan Youth Officer) when she did work experience with him. Beth is one of the council representatives at the Church of England National Youth Council (CEYC) so she passes on the views of young people in derbyshire to those who represent Young People at General Synod. She has size 6 feet and absolutely hates the smell of oranges.
Leah is the Youth Council’s other representative on CEYC and goes to the meetings in April and November alongside Beth. Leah joined the council after attending a ‘Teens as Teachers’ training weekend at The Peak Centre.
Tim is 15 and sadly doesn’t have an interesting fact, as the others, but that’ll soon change!! Tim, along with Izzie, represents the council at The Peak Centre.
Patrick (often known as paddy) joined the council at The Youth Council residential in February 2009. He’s been involved in young people’s activities across the diocese for quite a long time though and has attended the Youth Pilgrimage to Walsingham.
Zoe also joined the council at the residential in February 2009 and has already contributed a lot by helping to plan the prayer fast event and by getting involved in youth council debates and discussions.
