20 young people from around Derby Diocese took up our challenge to not to eat anything for 24hours and to drink only water and joined us at Wingerworth Parish Church Centre on Friday 1st May. The idea of this event was to raise money for Tearfund (the youth council’s chosen charity for 2009), to raise awareness of the issues faced by those in poverty and to explore different ways in which we can worship and pray. And I think we just about managed to meet our objectives…
We raised over £1000 for Tearfund (a big thank you to all those who went hungry). We created posters and presentations about the four key issues of HIV/Aids, Water Sanitation, Natural Disasters and Climate change and we took part in a role play challenge helping us to think about what it would be like living in poverty. We also took part in a variety of worship from traditional compline to dancing the can can and singing ‘Happy Day’ and at almost all times during the 24hours we had someone praying in our interactive prayer room.
